Hoboken High School Students Explore Wastewater Treatment and Flood Management at NHSA
This week, the North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) had the pleasure of hosting two classes from Hoboken High School: Advanced Placement Environmental and Climate Science Class. Led by their teacher, Mr. Perez, the students visited our plant to learn firsthand how wastewater treatment and flood management work to protect our environment and community.
The visit began with an overview of NHSA’s mission and the critical role wastewater treatment plays in maintaining public health and safeguarding local waterways. Students gained insight into the complex processes that transform wastewater into clean water, ready to return to the Hudson River. From primary treatment to advanced disinfection, the tour highlighted the innovative technology and expertise that goes into every step.
In addition to wastewater treatment, students explored NHSA’s efforts to manage stormwater and combat flooding, a topic especially relevant in the face of climate change. Our team shared how strategies like green infrastructure, combined sewer overflow systems, and real-time monitoring are helping mitigate flooding impacts in our service area.
The students were highly engaged, asking thoughtful questions about how these systems adapt to increasing rainfall and rising sea levels. Mr. Perez emphasized the importance of exposing students to industries like wastewater management, stating, “Students need to see how systems like these work so they can understand the career opportunities available to them. Visits like this can inspire them to pursue fields they may not have considered before.”
At NHSA, we’re committed to fostering the next generation of environmental stewards. Hosting local students not only sparks curiosity about our work but also inspires them to take an active role in addressing climate and environmental issues.
Thank you to Mr. Perez and his AP Environmental and Climate Science classes for spending the day with us. We’re excited to see what these bright minds accomplish in the future!
Stay connected with NHSA for more community outreach and educational events. Together, we can build a cleaner, more sustainable future.
